Egypt Update

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon appealed on Tuesday for the release of deposed president Mohamed Morsi in a phone call with Egypt's foreign minister.
"He called for an end to all violence and urged the interim authorities to ensure protection of the fundamental human rights of all Egyptians, including freedom of speech and assembly," a UN statement said, referring to Ban's message to Egyptian foreign minister Nabil Fahy.
Ban "reiterated his call for the release of Mr Mohammed Morsi," it said.[Al jazeera]

Tamarod, the petition campaign which organised the June 30 protests that led to Mohamed Morsi's ouster by the military, issued a statement rejecting any "political deal" with the Muslim Brotherhood.
The group also called for transitional justice for those killed and wounded since the revolution, according to a report in Daily News Egypt:
“The signatories of this statement emphasis its categorical rejection to make any political deals against the aspirations of the Egyptian people,” read the statement, which called for “real transitional justice.”
The group also called on the transitional government to carry out fair and transparent trials and investigations of all those accused of crimes from 25 January 2011 until now.
Ironically, though, the statement went on to say that "the Egyptian people stand side-by-side with the Egyptian authorities and security services." Those same security services are responsible for many of the abuses committed since the revolution. [Al jazeera]
