Thousands of women supporters of deposed Egyptian
President Mohamed Morsi marched through the capital Cairo on Tuesday to
demand his release and saying mediation efforts by the EU's foreign
policy chief Catherine Ashton were of no importance.
Ashton is one of the only figures that is accepted by both sides as a potential mediator in a conflict that has plunged the most populous Arab state into violent confrontation.
The women on the Cairo march though said they did not need any foreign interference.
"With regards to [EU Foreign policy chief] Ashton, this has nothing to do with her or anyone else. The Egyptian people want to check on the president that we elected in a free and fair election witnessed by the whole world. We are not waiting for Ashton or anyone else to come and set our president free. God willing we will defend our president and free him, and we will celebrate his return to the palace," said Aya Ala.
"We don't care about Ashton or anyone else. What we care about is that there be democracy in our country. Where are you the free people of the world. Where are the ones who demand democracy, where is America? Where is Europe and the developed states? You've proven now that you are uncivilised. You believe in democracy in word only, as a slogan," said another Morsi supporter, Soheir Mohamed.
